Careers book

Careers in Sport and Recreation booklet

At the end of 2008, the Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) needed a book designed to distribute to youth interested in careers in sport and recreation. They did not have the time to do the project in-house, so approached me as a freelancer to liaise with the client and the Communications Editor to produce the book. With the target audience in mind, I began the design process by organising the information in a manner that would be easily understandable and accessible. After organising the information I then came up with ways of visually displaying the information. All of the 40 pages were designed, and then went through a feedback process with the consultants. After I organised quotes through various printers a total of 3000 copies were printed and distributed among the consultants involved. The publication is now distributed at career expos and during school career presentations.

Skywest

Skywest

The Department of Sport and Recreation’s (DSR) Regional Manager wanted to recognise one of our major sponsors, Skywest. Fortunately, the Communications team had purchased a large format poster printer to cost effectively print such material. So, the task was to produce a 610mm x 1600mm banner that communicated Skywest’s support of, and contribution to, sport and recreation in regional WA. It had to cover all sporting and recreational activities, and ethnicities. The design took shape based around vectored silhouettes I had been working on for another project, and the concept was based around Skywest making sport and recreation happen in regional WA. The advertising has helped ensure future funding from Skywest for DSR. I also altered the design so that it would be suitable for a certificate to give to Skywest in recognition of their support at the Sport and Recreation biannual industry awards.

720 Woolves

Our Communications Manager had come up with an idea to work with Russell Woolf’s Drive show on ABC 720. Teams would talk with Russell on air about their journey as a team, the department would be able to promote its advocacy messages on the value of participation to the ABC audience. We needed a name for the teams, and a uniform designed. This job was given to me, and the challenge was to come up with something bright, vibrant and fun. The design began to take shape and was approved by ABC Radio. The t-shirt designs were a big hit with player John Linton who said, ‘on a side note, full points have to go to whoever designed the 720 uniforms – I didn’t think it was possible to make a fuchsia v-neck polo look good – but you somehow pulled it off.’ Banners were then printed up for each of the different sports to promote the Drive show with Russell Woolf.

Agent

agent

This was a university project with a brief to create a promotional CD/DVD for an alLocated imaginary product or service. I got alLocated an overly caffeinated, high in sugar content energy drink.

Imaginary energy drink called Agent. Hand-drawn introduction animation. Photographic imagery for contents. Simple elegant design.

Please note, this was not designed for web use, but rather a CD/DVD distribution so is quite large in size. If you wish to interact with the project please be patient.

1906

1906

This was a university project, with the brief to base an educational interactive online package around one of three permanent exhibitions at the Perth Museum.

I chose the Perth Goal exhibition for my interactive package. For this brief, I focussed on educating a target audience of around middle school level. I focussed on the lifestyle of Perthians in 1906. The most important aspect of this brief was designing the information in such a way that the data became knowledge to the user through good design. I felt that I managed to accomplish this.

Nature Play WA

Nature Play WA

I was approached in March 2010 to design a website for the DSR as a freelancer. They didn’t have the time, and knew from previous website freelancing that I had the knowhow to do the job quickly and to their standards.

The client was after something friendly, inviting, and simple, to maximise it’s value for the public as a guide for parents.

From initial concept, the website was graphically designed, then implemented in HTML/CSS, then structured in ModX, an opensource CMS.

The website was successfully launched in conjuction with Richard Louv’s ‘Nature-Deficit Disorder’ presentation in Perth on April 21st, that saw over 1700 people attending.

Fierce Mild

Fierce Mild

At the end of 2009, I was asked to design a logo and myspace for Melbourne band Fierce Mild. After a few variations on logos and general looks and feels, this design was implemented for the band's myspace. The layout was implemented by me in HTML and CSS.

NAIDOC Carnival

The annual NAIDOC Netball Carnival was held in the middle of 2009. Part of the Department of Sport and Recreation's role in sponsoring the carnival is to promote participation and community spirit. I went along to the carnival, and filmed things that were happening throughout the day.

After taking the original footage, it was important to capture the spirit of the carnival with the variety of footage and interviews that were captured. I composited the footage together in Premiere, and synced the music and titles in After Effects.

Careers Videos

As part of the Careers in Sport and Recreation program, the Youth Committee, that comprises of a variety of youth interested in the future of sport and recreation in WA, wanted to interview a series of people in the industry about their careers.

My first role in this project, was to educate the students with how to use the camera, audio and lighting to create a professional looking video. After the interviews were conducted, it was then a matter of condensing down over half an hour of footage for each interviewee, and to order the answered questions in a cohesive way. After this was done, it was just a matter of tieing the branding in with the Careers in Sport and Recreation booklet which I had previously designed. This was then screened at a presentation of the youth committee's work, and will shortly be made available online at the Department's website.
